Departure points: whale watching Cabo with hotel pickup or your own way to the marina

Every whale trip at the cape begins at a check-in office on land, and the crew walks you out to the slip from there. This page maps those offices and docks in Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, and says when adding hotel transport is worth it.

Updated 4 November 2026

In shortWhale watching Cabo with hotel pickup starts at a marina check-in office, nearly all of them on Boulevard Marina along the horseshoe of docks. The humpback trip checks in inside the Tesoro Hotel at Local A-20, close to docks M-O, and hotel pickup is not included on it. Book the catamaran and the round-trip transport charge is one you settle at the counter rather than online. San Jose del Cabo departures use Puerto Los Cabos Marina.

Where whale watching boats leave from in Cabo San Lucas

The marina in Cabo San Lucas is a horseshoe. Docks are lettered and numbered around the inside of the curve, and the land side is a run of plazas, hotels and restaurants, with the check-in offices sitting on Boulevard Marina, the road that follows the water. Do not go looking for a boat first. Find the office, give your name, and the crew walks you out to the slip.

Four landmarks do most of the navigating. The Tesoro Hotel holds a marina-level office at Local A-20, close to docks M-O, next to the white lighthouse with a red strip and behind the D'Right Joint restaurant. Plaza Bonita, also on Blvd Marina, sits behind Starbucks when you come from the road and behind Nowhere Bar when you come along the water; one operator's office there publishes hours of 07:00 to 18:00 daily and is a 20-minute walk from the cruise-ship tender dock. Dock zero is in front of the Breathless hotel, which is the name to type into a map app or give a driver. Dock F, further round, is where the sailing charters tie up.

Walking that same stretch of water you pass the municipal tourist assistance office, the Centro de Atención al Turista: the postal address reads Blvd. Paseo de la Marina S/N, Mza. s/n Lt. 8, Marina de Cabo San Lucas, Col. Centro, C.P. 23450, and the line that answers is +52 624 143 7231. Save it in your phone before the boat day, in case a meeting point or a driver goes sideways.

Which dock style matches which boat

Dock height and gate style tell you what kind of trip you booked. The small purpose-built whale boats and rigid inflatables board from low docks you step down onto, dock zero in front of the Breathless hotel being the clearest example; that format runs 2 hours with hydrophones aboard and no restroom. Group boats and catamarans use the 2.5-hour format with shade, and they sit higher, with a short gangway rather than a step down.

Sailing catamarans and sailboats work from Dock F in the Cabo Marina, at the quieter end of the curve, away from the offices clustered near the Tesoro Hotel. If your confirmation names a hotel rather than a dock letter, treat the hotel as the check-in point and expect the walk to the boat to be part of the check-in.

Puerto Los Cabos Marina in San Jose del Cabo is a different build: individually gated floating concrete docks, 230 slips with expansion plans to 400, up to 4.5 metres of water at mean low water and room for vessels up to 250 feet. It is flat, gated and easy underfoot, which is why the departures there suit anyone who does not want to climb into a low inflatable.

Whale watching Cabo with hotel pickup: what the ride involves

Hotel transport is an add-on on most whale-watching trips on this site rather than part of the fare. On the luxury catamaran the round-trip transportation fee is paid at check-in; on the humpback biologist trip hotel pickup and drop-off are listed as not included; in San Jose del Cabo private transportation is not included either. Decide at booking rather than at the dock.

The ride is a shared van or car that collects from several properties before it reaches the marina, so your pickup time is earlier than the departure time by a margin you do not control. Be in the lobby, outside, with your bag closed, before the time on your confirmation, and tell the front desk which company is coming so they can point the driver at you. Properties at the far ends of Cabo San Lucas are the ones to check first: one cruise on the market lists transport from Quivira, Hard Rock, Rancho Grand Solmar and Nobu as not included, which tells you those addresses sit outside standard pickup rounds.

Add pickup if you are staying along the corridor without a car, if your group includes small children and you would rather not manage a taxi at dawn, or if your trip is a late or sunset departure and you want someone else dealing with the drive back. Skip it when your hotel is in the town itself, because the offices on Boulevard Marina are a walk away and the horseshoe is easy to cross on foot.

Meeting points in San Jose del Cabo and along the corridor

If you are staying in San Jose del Cabo or at the eastern end of the corridor, take the San Jose departure rather than driving to the cape. The office is at Puerto Los Cabos Marina in La Playa, just east of the historic centre, at 23 degrees 03.4 minutes north and 109 degrees 40.2 minutes west. Most local hotels are a 10 to 15 minute taxi or ride-hail hop from there. Meeting times are usually 8:15 AM or 11:30 AM and can be moved, so open the confirmation email the evening before.

Corridor hotels sit between the two towns, and the choice there is a budget one. The Ruta del Desierto urban bus connects the main points between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas with highway stops at major hotels, takes approximately one hour end to end and costs between 2 and 3 US dollars depending on the exchange rate, according to the official tourism board; the same board puts a taxi or van between the two cities at around 60 to 70 US dollars. Taxi vans are red and yellow in San Jose del Cabo and blue and green in Cabo San Lucas, both running 24 hours.

A bus with an hour of running time and highway stops is not the vehicle for a morning departure you have prepaid. For an early slot at the cape from a corridor hotel, book the transport add-on or take a taxi, and keep the bus for the return leg.

When driving yourself and parking at the marina is simpler

A rental car beats the transport add-on in three situations: you are four or more adults, you have taken the first morning departure and want to be on the boulevard before the pickup rounds begin, or you are combining the boat with something else that day. Park at the marina, walk the horseshoe to your office, and you keep control of your own timing.

Arrival-day planning runs off the airport figures. The official tourism board gives Los Cabos International Airport as 8 miles from San Jose del Cabo and a 23-mile drive from Cabo San Lucas, while the airport operator states 11 kilometres from San Jose del Cabo; check your own routing on the day, since the two bodies measure it differently. The airport has three terminals with four halls, Terminal 1 covering all domestic operations plus some international flights and Terminal 2 international flights only.

If you land and sail on the same day, the San Jose departure is the shorter transfer by a wide margin, with Puerto Los Cabos a short hop east of the historic centre. Leave the cape marina for your second day.

Questions people ask

Is hotel pickup included in the price of a Cabo whale watching tour?

No. On the luxury catamaran the round-trip transportation fee is paid at check-in and is not part of the fare. The humpback trip in Cabo San Lucas lists hotel pickup and drop-off as not included, and the San Jose del Cabo group tour does not include private transportation. Sort the ride at booking so you are not negotiating it on the morning.

Can I reach the marina on the corridor bus?

The Ruta del Desierto urban bus connects the main points between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas, with highway stops at major hotels, and the official tourism board puts the fare between 2 and 3 US dollars depending on the exchange rate. The ride between the two cities takes approximately one hour. That works for a relaxed return, and much less well for making a prepaid morning departure.

What landmark should I give a taxi or ride-hail driver?

Name a building. For the dock zero boats, the Breathless hotel is the easiest reference for a driver or a map app, with the guides waiting outside the dock gate in green shirts. For the offices at docks M-O, give the Tesoro Hotel on Boulevard Marina; for Plaza Bonita, name the plaza itself. In San Jose del Cabo, Puerto Los Cabos Marina in La Playa is the address.

How early should I be at the check-in office?

Earlier than feels necessary, because check-in, the walk out along the dock and the pre-departure briefing all happen before the boat moves. Mexican rules require the operator to brief passengers on required behaviour at the start of every trip, so that time is built in. If your confirmation gives a meeting time rather than a departure time, treat the meeting time as fixed; the San Jose del Cabo slots, usually 8:15 AM or 11:30 AM, can change, so read the email the day before.

Does the boat leave from the Arch?

No. Boats leave from inside the marina horseshoe and run out past Land's End from there. The federal notice for the season keeps whale watching out of the northern part of the protected-area polygon inside the port precinct, the 2-kilometre circle around the Arch of Cabo San Lucas included, and out of a 1-kilometre strip running seaward from Punta Ballenas along the eastern boundary, so your captain searches offshore and the Arch goes by as scenery.
