A 2.5-hour trip out of the Cabo San Lucas marina on a small boat with a maximum of 12 adults, a marine biologist on board and a hydrophone for humpback song.
Updated 4 November 2026
The trip lasts 2.5 hours and takes a maximum of 12 adults, with a marine biologist on board for the whole time. A hydrophone goes in when conditions allow, and that is the one moment the engine stops: Mexican rules require boats to keep the engine running in neutral while observing a stationary whale, with shutdown permitted only to listen to whale song. Male humpbacks sing complete songs lasting 7 to 30 minutes and barely move while they do it, so the quiet minutes are often the best part of the morning.
For a Cabo whale watching family the practical details carry more weight than the size of the boat. There is a restroom on board, which matters on a 2.5-hour trip with children. The guide takes photos during the tour and passes them to guests at no extra charge, so nobody spends the sighting wrestling with a phone in the swell. Single-use plastic bottles are no longer provided on board, so bring your own refillable one. Transportation to the marina and gratuities are not included.
Distance to the whales is fixed by law, and knowing that in advance avoids disappointment at the rail. Under NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010 boats under 10 metres hold at least 60 metres from a humpback and larger vessels at least 80 metres; boats waiting their turn stay back at 240 metres, no more than four boats may work the same whale or group at once, and they may stay a maximum of 30 minutes. Speed inside observation areas stays under 5 knots. A travelling whale is approached only on a diagonal from the rear quarter, parallel to its course. From that range a 60-foot animal with flukes up to 18 feet wide and a blow 10 to 16 feet high is still unmistakable.
Go on the earliest departure you can get children out of bed for. The Los Cabos tourism board notes that early tours bring calmer seas and softer light, and calm water is the single biggest factor in how a child handles the boat. CDC guidance is worth following: keep a view of the horizon, stay out of the bow where motion is strongest, skip reading and screens, and get fresh air on the face. Susceptibility to motion sickness peaks between ages 7 and 12 and then declines, while children under two are usually unaffected. Winter mornings are mild rather than hot, with mean air temperatures of 22.1 C in December, 21.2 C in January and 20.9 C in February, so pack a layer for the wind, which averages about 3.9 m/s from the north-northwest through those months.
The season runs on a federal notice, not on how the water looks. For 2026-2027 SEMARNAT authorizes whale watching in the Cabo San Lucas area from 15 December 2026 to 30 April 2027, and the same dates cover the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area; the notice was signed in Mexico City on 22 October 2026. The tourism board puts the peak between January and March. Light is short at the start: on 15 December the sun rises at 06:53 and sets at 17:37, while by 15 April sunrise is 05:59 and sunset 18:40.
Up to 12 adults, hydrophone listening when conditions allow, a restroom on board and the guide's photos at no extra charge. Transportation and gratuities are not included.

The five trips in the table all leave from Cabo San Lucas and differ mainly in boat size and what is served on board. A Cabo whale watching family with younger children is usually better off on the smaller boats, where the guide stays within earshot and the group does not spread across two decks. This page's trip at $109 is the one with a restroom and a biologist for the full 2.5 hours; the pirate ship cruise at $99 and the lunch cruise at $115 are larger-vessel formats, the luxury catamaran at $129 runs the same 2.5 hours with alcoholic beverages and snacks included, and the zodiac trip is the smallest open boat of the set, with photos included.
