What happens on Cabo San Lucas whale watching cruises

All six boats go out and search. The federal notice for the 2026-2027 season authorizes whale watching in the Cabo San Lucas area from 15 December 2026 to 30 April 2027, and inside the protected polygon whale watching is restricted in a 2-kilometre zone around the Arch of Cabo San Lucas and in a 1-kilometre strip running seaward from Punta Ballenas. The cruises that list the Arch, among them the trimaran and the glass-bottom boat, pass it for photographs and then head further out towards the Pacific or the Sea of Cortez depending on the wind that morning.

Distance is set by law. Under NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010 a boat under 10 m stays at least 60 m from a humpback and a medium or large boat at least 80 m, boats waiting their turn hold 240 metres, and no more than four boats may stay around the same whale or group, and each may observe for a maximum of 30 minutes. Speed drops to about 2 knots on entering the observation zone and stays under 5 knots inside it, and a travelling whale is approached only on a diagonal from the rear quarter. The 8-metre boat with 14 guests and the 100-foot catamaran therefore sit at different legal floors from the same animal.

The engine stays running in neutral while you watch and may be switched off only to use a hydrophone. The all-female-crew boat carries one and lets passengers listen when time allows, which is worth the wait in January and February: a complete male humpback song lasts 7 to 30 minutes and the singer stays more or less in one place throughout. Fishing, diving and swimming are prohibited during observation, so nobody gets in the water on any of these trips.

Mornings are the calmer slot, and the operator of the 8-metre boat says so in its own listing. Mean air temperature at the cape is 22.1 C in December, 21.2 C in January and 20.9 C in February, with mean wind around 3.9 m/s from the north-northwest and winter peaks near 10 to 12 m/s, so bring a windproof layer even for a 2-hour cruise. On 15 January the sun rises 07:03 and sets 17:56, which puts the first departures close to full light and the late ones into the softest part of the afternoon.

Permits are visible if you look. Authorized boats carry an official identifying marker in a visible place and fly the SEMARNAT whale-watching flag issued for the season, with the year number in the bottom right corner, and the crew briefs passengers on required behaviour before the boat leaves the dock. Humpback and gray whales are the species most commonly seen here, with blue, fin and orca sightings far rarer.

Which cruise fits you

Photos and a guarantee: the all-female-crew trip at 1,680 pesos, 2 hours, 5.0 ★ (2144 reviews). Digital photos of the tour and bottled water are included, the captains and guides are biologists, and the whale warranty gives a second tour at no cost if no whales are found on the first. The boat is 8 metres with a maximum of 14 guests at dock zero in front of the Breathless hotel, and the guides wait outside the dock in green shirts. It is not suitable if you are pregnant or have back or neck problems or recent surgery.

Eating on board with a group: the lunch cruise and the dinner cruise, both 2.5 hours from $115, use the same SunRider 100-foot catamaran and the same boarding point, main pier gate No. 4 in front of Sr Frogs, between Cabo Dolphins and the craft market. Lunch cruise 4.8 ★ (214 reviews), buffet dinner 4.6 ★ (121 reviews), both with unlimited drinks at the open bar. The operator describes a 90 percent record of finding whales over the 30 years it has been running the lunch cruise.

Lowest price and shortest time on the water: the pirate ship, 2 hours from $99, 4.7 ★ (119 reviews). You sail the Buccaneer Queen with breakfast, an open bar of beer, vodka, tequila and sodas, and a bilingual guide, leaving from La Terminal de Cabo right behind the Breathless Resort. Arrive 30 minutes before departure.

Cruise passengers and anyone without a car: the 4-hour sightseeing cruise at $115, 4.8 ★ (208 reviews), is the only one of the six that includes pickup, from selected Los Cabos hotels or from the cruise port. It runs on a glass-bottom boat past the Arch and the marina, then adds a tequila tasting with an explanation of how the drink is made and shopping time in town. The port access fee required by the port authority is not included.

Deck space and nothing else to organise: the luxury trimaran, 2 to 3 hours from $115, 4.8 ★ (48 reviews), includes sodas, refreshments and life jackets and runs past the Arch of Cabo San Lucas and Land's End. Lunch is not included on this one, so eat before you board. The listing gives its own season as 15 December to 15 April, two weeks shorter at the end than the federal notice.
