Whale Watching from Puerto Los Cabos, San Jose del Cabo

Boats from the San Jose del Cabo marina reach authorized water without the corridor drive to the cape. This page covers what the east side gives you, what it leaves out, and when the run to Cabo San Lucas still earns the hour.

Whale watching at Puerto Los Cabos marina

Boats leave from Marina Puerto Los Cabos, in La Playa just east of the historic centre of San Jose del Cabo, at 23 degrees 03.4 minutes north and 109 degrees 40.2 minutes west. The dates come from a federal notice. Because San Jose del Cabo sits inside the Cabo San Lucas area named in that notice, these docks work to exactly the same window as the cape: 15 December 2026 to 30 April 2027, under a document SEMARNAT signed in Mexico City on 22 October 2026. Demand on the east side follows the January to March peak.

Two hours on the water, from $99, rated 5.0 ★ (271 reviews): that is the Whale Watching Group Tour in San Jose del Cabo. A hydrophone goes over the side so you can hear the singing, pictures from the trip cost nothing extra, and there is water and cookies aboard. Private transportation is not included, so you arrange your own ride to the dock.

Check-in is usually set for 8:15 AM or 11:30 AM. The operator can move it, which is why the confirmation email is worth opening the evening before rather than on the way out of the hotel. Humpback and gray are the whales you can realistically expect off this coast; blue, fin and orca turn up far more rarely anywhere in Los Cabos.

Two hours from Puerto Los Cabos Marina

This is the only trip on the site that leaves from the San Jose del Cabo marina, so the whole morning stays inside town: 2 hours, from $99, with hydrophone listening and tour pictures included.

Where the marina sits relative to the airport and the hotel zone

Los Cabos International Airport is 8 miles from San Jose del Cabo according to the official tourism board, while the airport operator gives the distance as 11 kilometres. Cabo San Lucas is a 23-mile drive from the same airport. If you land on the east side and want to be on a boat the next morning, the marina sits at the short end of that geography. Find out which hall your flight lands in before you plan the taxi: there are three terminals and four halls, with international flights handled in Terminal 2 and every domestic operation plus a share of the international ones in Terminal 1.

Puerto Los Cabos is a working marina with 230 slips and expansion planned to 400, berths for vessels up to 250 feet, up to 4.5 metres of water at mean low water, individually gated floating concrete docks with 30, 50 and 100 amp power, metered water, a fuel dock and a pump-out station or pump-out boat. For a passenger that means gated docks and check-in at the office, so turn up at the time your booking gives you.

Whale watching from San Jose del Cabo hotels

Reckon on a 10 to 15 minute ride from most hotels in town to the marina office. Red and yellow taxi vans are the San Jose del Cabo fleet and run 24 hours a day, blue and green ones work Cabo San Lucas, and a ride-hail app covers a short hop like this just as well. You can hold an early check-in time without leaving town.

Take the 8:15 AM slot if it is offered on your date. Early is what the official tourism board recommends, for calmer seas and softer light, and the wind record points the same way across the season: mean speed at 10 metres near the cape reads 3.9 m/s in December, January and February, then 4.1 m/s in March and 4.3 m/s in April. Calm water does more for a 2-hour trip than any feature of the boat, since the crew spends much of it reading the surface for a bushy blow 10 to 16 feet high.

An 11:30 AM check-in still works if your morning is already spoken for, and it puts you back in San Jose del Cabo with the afternoon ahead of you. Both slots start at the same office on the marina.

What the eastern shore gives you and what it leaves out

The federal notice sets the areas as well as the dates. For the Los Cabos municipality it names two authorized observation areas: the Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Cabo San Lucas, which covers San Jose del Cabo as well as the cape, and Cabo Pulmo–Los Frailes further up the east coast, where a 3.5-kilometre coastal strip is closed to whale-watching boats.

Two zones inside the Cabo San Lucas polygon are restricted because of heavy boat traffic. Both of them sit at the far western end of the protected area, nowhere near these docks: a 2-kilometre circle drawn on the Arch of Cabo San Lucas within the port precinct in the polygon's northern part, plus a 1-kilometre band that follows the polygon's eastern boundary seaward from Punta Ballenas. Nothing equivalent is drawn off San Jose del Cabo. Traffic also decides your turn once whales are found, since no more than four boats may stay around the same whale or group, observation of that group stops at 30 minutes, and anyone queueing holds 240 metres.

Leaving from Puerto Los Cabos, you do not pass the Arch or Land's End on the way out. No cape cruise parks beside the rock and waits either, because whale watching inside that 2-kilometre circle is closed. The trade is a sightseeing transit at one end of the trip, against the hour on the road to the other town.

Getting between the two towns

No government or tourism-board page publishes a town-to-town drive time, so plan with the figures that are published. For the trip across to the cape the cheap option is the Ruta del Desierto urban bus, which links the main points between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas for between 2 and 3 US dollars depending on the exchange rate, picks up at major hotels along the highway and takes approximately one hour end to end. A taxi or van between the two cities runs around 60 to 70 US dollars according to the same board. Confirm fares and timings on the day.

The drive buys you a longer format at the cape. What the Humpback Whale Watching Tour in Cabo San Lucas adds is half an hour on the water, 2.5 hours from $99, rated 4.9 ★ (1065 reviews), with a marine biologist guide, bottled water and marine park fees in the price; souvenir photos cost extra and hotel pickup is not part of it. You check in at the office inside the Tesoro Hotel, Local A-20, on the marina near dock M-O, beside the white lighthouse with the red stripe and behind the D'Right Joint restaurant.

Make that trip on a day with nothing else in it, and not on your departure day, since the airport is on the east side. If you are staying mid-corridor rather than in either town, the bus stops at major hotels on the highway, which puts both marinas on the same road.

East side or the cape: how to choose

Stay east if you are based in San Jose del Cabo or along the eastern corridor. A 10 to 15 minute ride, a 2-hour departure and a hydrophone in the water make for a cleaner morning than an hour on the bus each way around a boat trip, and the same federal season and the same observation distances apply wherever you sail from.

Go to Cabo San Lucas for the extra half hour on the water with a marine biologist aboard, or if the Arch and Land's End matter to you as scenery at the start or end of the trip. Book whichever side you choose for the first or second full day of your stay rather than the last morning, so a blank trip still leaves you room to go out again.

Questions people ask

Is the Puerto Los Cabos season the same as the one at the cape?

Yes. One SEMARNAT notice covers both, because San Jose del Cabo falls inside the Cabo San Lucas Flora and Fauna Protection Area, and for 2026-2027 the authorized period is 15 December 2026 to 30 April 2027. Cabo Pulmo National Park carries the same dates. The notice is reissued every year, so check the current one if you are booking far ahead.

How close will the boat get to a whale?

The floor is written into NOM-131-SEMARNAT-2010: 60 metres between a humpback and a boat under 10 metres, 80 metres if the vessel is medium or large, and that is the figure a permitted Los Cabos crew works to. Boats waiting their turn stay 240 metres back, four boats is the ceiling around one whale or group, and observation of that group ends at 30 minutes. A boat without a whale-watching permit has to keep about 800 feet off.

What tells me this marina's boats are permitted?

Look for the flag on the way down the dock. SEMARNAT gives every authorized company a fresh one each season, numbered in the bottom right corner for the year, and it has to fly the whole time the boat is whale watching, next to the official identifying marker that authorized vessels keep in a visible place. Behind the flag sits paperwork the company must hold before it can run a trip at all: a SEMARNAT authorization for non-extractive use of wildlife. The crew also has to brief passengers on expected behaviour at the start of the trip and display the rules on visible signage.

Is swimming with whales possible from Puerto Los Cabos?

No. Swimming with whales is illegal in Cabo, and during whale observation the prohibited list also takes in fishing, diving, water-skiing and parasailing. The single in-water exception in the state is orcas at La Ventana, which Baja California Sur legalized under a pilot scheme capped at 24 boats a day, at least a six-hour commitment from Los Cabos. Snorkelling with whale sharks means going to La Paz instead, on a separate calendar that runs October through May.

Can I use a kayak or a jet ski instead of booking a boat?

Jet skis, kayaks, canoes and paddle-powered inflatables may not be used for whale watching at all, and observation from ultralights, helicopters and submersibles is prohibited in the authorized zones. Locating whales with sonar or echo-sounding gear is off the table too. Watching from a permitted vessel is the only lawful way to do it here.
